Thursday morning breakfast

Aunt Beth and Uncle David have Thursdays off, and occasionally we join them for breakfast and play.   Although we don’t go on a regular basis, we have quite a regular routine once we get there.  Uncle David cooks a big breakfast.  James runs straight to the window to watch the birds and squirrels {usually finding something to play with on the way  – lotion in this case}

We eat a big breakfast then, James gets into a few things around the house.

On this Thursday morning, he learned how to open a door for the first time.  Something he’s been working on for months.  Thank goodness we don’t have these kind of doorknobs at home.

Aunt Beth brings out a few special toys.

Throughout the morning, James knocks on the door, while saying “knock, knock”, because what he really wants to do is play on the deck.

{I realized I forgot to comb his hair.  So, James rocked his 70s do.  Could it really be time for another haircut?!}

And then, James knows that we get to walk down to the pond to see the ducks.  So, he cues us with quacking.  I appreciate that Aunt Beth and Uncle David are okay with switching activities every 20 minutes.

This Thursday, the ducks walked right up to us.  We could hear the real quacking.  Very exciting.

This picture kind of cracks me up.  I am not a big animal person, but I sure do try for this little guy.  I’m not sure what I was afraid of here.  I think they just got a little too close for comfort.

We walk back to the house.  James has gotten really good about holding a hand.  A battle I’ve been fighting for about two months now.  James finally knows that he may not walk in a parking lot without holding a hand.  No. Exceptions.

We drive home with just enough time to wear James out, but not let him fall asleep in the car.  It’s a risky move.  My favorite thing about this new little tradition is that James remembers the routine.  The breakfast, the deck, the ducks, the toys.  It’s touching to see him making the memories.  It’s crazy to think that all these little plans and play dates,  get-togethers and errands make up our days.  And our days are making up the life of this sweet boy.  And he’s just along for the ride.

  1. Chollet, I LOVE that! WE love that! You are so amazing with your writing, photos and mothering :) Needless to say, we treasure and look forward to these visits. One day soon they'll include some worms and fishing poles! Maybe even Uncle Hampton could give us some pointers and share the fun too!
